Slab Building: Bird Houses

Come join us as we make custom clay bird houses using “slab technique”. Slab-constructed pottery allows you to pursue projects that cannot be made with coil, pinch or on the wheel. In our class, learn the benefits of working with “stiff slabs” to build geometric shapes. Over 2 weekends, you will create panels of clay, assemble them into the style of bird house of your choosing – and then adorn it with designs pressed into and cut through the surface. Although some clay experience is always helpful, if you have never worked in clay – please don’t be intimidated. We will keep the bird houses in simple geometric shapes and help you through the process. The first weekend's classes will cover building and decorating your bird houses and the final weekend will include finishing touches and instructions on glazing. We are excited to offer this class and hope that you join us!

WHEN: July 19, 20, 26, 27, 2025 from 2-4 PM

About the Instructor

Marshon became a clay enthusiast post-COVID, as the world began to open up again. She joined Verge and began teaching herself the workings of clay. With time, she built a home studio and at the prodding of an assistant at Sacramento City College (SCC), she began taking clay sculpturing classes from basic to advanced. It was here that Marshon learned slab construction and quickly became enthralled with all that could be built using this technique. She has made everything from automobiles & school buses to tennis shoes using slab. She loves slab construction and hopes to share it with you!
